“Tobin—”

“Don’t.” Tobin held up a hand. “Don’t tell me to calm down. Don’t tell me this is manageable. Don’t tell me anything.” He pointed at Nyx’s twisted form. “That is a living siege weapon. In my academy. During spring break. Because a bunch of students decided to have a prank war and nobody stopped them.”

“You could have stopped it,” Sera said. “You could have surrendered.”

Tobin’s laugh was hollow. “Surrender? To you? Never.”

Sera’s expression didn’t change. “Then you chose this outcome.”

Tobin jabbed a finger at her. “No. You chose this outcome when you built weapons of war in a school.”

Sera shrugged. “We built what was necessary to win. If you’d been less competent, we wouldn’t have needed to escalate.”

“That’s not—” Tobin stopped and drew a breath. “You know what? Fine. You want war? You’ll get war.”

He turned and strode back toward the academy. His footsteps echoed in the silent courtyard.

“Where is he going?” Cassius asked.

Alden watched Tobin disappear into the shadows of the corridor. “To get his dummies. All of them.”

Cassius frowned. “We destroyed one.”

Alden kept watching the empty corridor. “He had five. That’s four left. And if I know Tobin, he’s been building more.”

The courtyard fell silent. The siege weapons waited. The morning sun climbed higher and cast long shadows across the battered flagstones.

“This has gone beyond pranks,” Alden said.

Sera nodded. “Yes. It has.”

Alden turned to face her. “Someone’s going to get hurt.”

Sera’s expression didn’t waver. “Probably.”

Alden held her gaze. “And you’re doing it anyway.”

Sera turned back to her ballista. “We’re fae, Mr. Voss. We don’t start things. But we absolutely finish them.”

The sound of marching came from the corridors. Heavy footsteps pounded in formation, more than four. So many more than four. Tobin hadn’t just maintained his existing dummies. He’d built an army.

Alden counted the footsteps. He heard eight, then ten, then maybe more. Training dummies marched in formation and their enchanted limbs moved in perfect synchronization.

“He’s been busy too,” Nyx said. Her voice came out wrong, distorted by her transformed state. “Good. I was worried this would be boring.”
